Winston-Salem, NC – In a game neither offense shined bright, it was a special teams play that proved to be the difference at the Shaw Bears saw their losing skid extend falling to the Winston-Salem State Rams 17-10 Saturday afternoon inside Bowman Gray Stadium.
After both teams exchanged punts after driving inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, the Rams cashed in on a Torrin Campbellinterception that was returned to the one. A delay of game penalty and three straight empty plays led to a 22-yard field goal making the score 3-0 in favor of WSSU just before the quarter break.
Another interception from the Rams set them up at the one-yard line once again. On this drive, WSSU cashed in for seven from one yard out making the score 10-0. Shaw put together a scoring drive that ended in a 42-yard field goal from Devin Versteegen with 5:54 left in the half. Shaw tied the game at 10-10 just before the half as Patrick Blake found Jahquel Webb from 12 yards out for his first career touchdown. Versteegen added the PAT with 29 seconds left in the second quarter.
Both teams traded punts to start the half. The Rams fumbled on their next drive giving Shaw a short field. Shaw would settle for a field goal attempt that was blocked and returned for a touchdown giving the Rams a 17-10 lead early in the third.
The fourth quarter saw neither offense get much going until the Rams had a chance to ice the game with a late field goal that was never attempted due to a bad snap. Shaw would get two more chances to tie the game with its last coming inside of the last 20 seconds of regulation but saw their last chance end with a sack by the Rams extending the Bears losing streak to three games.
The Bears will return home after almost a month away for homecoming Saturday, October 22 as they host the Livingstone College Blue Bears. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 PM inside Durham County Memorial Stadium.
